it was a quiet night in Nakulabye, Kampala, just past 1:00 AM. The streets were empty, save for the occasional hum of a passing vehicle or the distant bark of a stray dog. Charles Muvawala, the Vice President of the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA), had just returned to his temporary residence after a long day of meetings and catching up with old friends. A respected figure in the Ugandan diaspora, Charles was in Uganda for a brief visit, reconnecting with his roots and advocating for the interests of Ugandans abroad. The National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been at the center of significant political events in Uganda recently. The party has faced a series of challenges, including raids on its headquarters and allegations of theft by security forces.

Raids on NUP Headquarters

On February 21-22, 2025, joint security forces comprising the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) conducted a raid on NUP’s headquarters in Kamwokya and its leadership school. The operation was officially described as an investigation into alleged military activities within NUP. However, the party dismissed this explanation, labeling it a politically motivated attack aimed at crippling its operations ahead of the 2026 elections.

Allegations of Theft and Vandalism

During the raid, NUP accused security personnel of stealing valuables, including millions of shillings, electronic devices, party merchandise, and key documents. NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya claimed that the security forces vandalized doors, CCTV infrastructure, and even took official party stamps1. The party has vowed to take legal action against the Uganda Police Force, the UPDF, and the Attorney General for the destruction of their property.

Release of NUP Members

Thank you to the organizers, the dedicated volunteers, and the staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly. Your hard work, commitment, and attention to detail, from the fabulous meals to the constant tea availability and camp security, are deeply appreciated.

A special thanks to our Ugamn committee for sparing time and representing us at the camp. You are true leaders, and your leadership is invaluable to our community.

We also want to thank all the community families who attended. Your participation, energy, engagement in activities, workshops, small groups, discussions, and willingness to connect with others created an enriching and joyful atmosphere. Seeing everyone come together, fostering new friendships, and strengthening our community bonds was heartwarming.
